Tommaso Cavazza

Tommaso Cavazza, Prof. Dr.

  • Assistant Professor SP 4 CRISPR Technology in Human Reproduction
  • Member of the Executive Committee
  • Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Genome Editing
  • Cavazza Lab for Celluar Embryogenesis and Genome Editing
  • Department of Reproductive Endocrinology‚ Faculty of Medicine

Tommaso Cavazza studied Biotechnology at the University of Bologna and obtained his PhD in Biomedicine at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (Barcelona). He worked in the laboratory of Isabelle Vernos, studying the mechanism of cell division. For his postdoctoral work, he joined the laboratory of Melina Schuh at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (Göttingen). He studied the causes of embryonic aneuploidy and established a method to image live bovine embryos at high spatial and temporal resolution. His postdoctoral work provided an explanation for embryonic aneuploidy and a novel experimental system to address questions about mammalian embryogenesis.

Research Interest
Tommaso Cavazza's lab wants to understand the cellular causes of early human embryonic failure and to determine the power and safety of genome editing for assisted reproductive technologies. To achieve these goals, they will use early bovine embryos, high resolution live microscopy, and proteomics and genomics techniques.
