Before joining UZH, Prof. Margaria was a Senior Researcher in the Law and Anthropology Department of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle, Germany). She holds an LL.M. with distinction in Human Rights from University College London, an LL.M. in Comparative, European and International Laws, and a PhD in Law from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy).

Prof. Margaria's work lies at the intersections of family law, human rights law, law and gender, and law and anthropology. She has published on a wide range of issues pertaining to parenthood, reproduction, and care. Her latest monograph The Construction of Fatherhood: The Jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights was published by Cambridge University Press in 2019. Her ongoing research explores legal approaches to family diversity, in particular LGBTQI+ families and families created through assisted reproduction, by shedding light on the experiences of those involved. Furthermore, Prof. Margaria is the Principal Investigator of the project “Who is the Court for? Bringing the Human (Back) into Human Rights Research” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
