Motherhood as a Choice? Reflections on Abortion and Surrogacy in the Case-law of the European Court of Human Rights
The URPP “Human Reproduction Reloaded” is delighted to announce that Prof. Dr. Ivana Jelić, Judge and President of Section I of the European Court of Human Rights, will deliver the inaugural / 2024 Annual Lecture on Reproduction. Her lecture, titled “Motherhood as a Choice? Reflections on Abortion and Surrogacy in the Case-law of the ECtHR”, is also part of the “Who is the Court for?” Lecture Series.

About Prof. Dr. Ivana Jelić
Ivana Jelić has served as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) since 2018. She is currently the President of Section 1 and has been elected to serve as the Court’s next Vice-President, with her term commencing on November 1st. Before her appointment at the ECtHR, she was an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montenegro, where she taught public international law, international human rights law, minority rights and international humanitarian law.
She has held visiting positions at several esteemed institutions, including the University of Bergen, UC Berkeley, Columbia University, Université Paris 2 – Assas, the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, Université Sophia Antiplos Nice, and Freie Universität Berlin. She has also been a visiting professor at numerous universities, with a focus on interdisciplinary study programs in international law, such as the LL.M. in International Law at the University of Johannesburg and the European Regional Master Program (ERMA) as a joint study program between the University of Sarajevo and the University of Bologna. Since 2019, she has taught courses on European human rights law at the LL.M. in European and International Law at the Europa-Institut, University of Saarland.
She has been involved in significant human rights work throughout her career, serving as a member of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe for the Improvement of Procedures for the Protection of Human Rights (DH-PR) from 2008 to 2010, and as a member of the Steering Committee of Human Rights (CDDH) from 2008 to 2012. She was also a member of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (ACFC) of the Council of Europe from 2012 to 2016, where she served as Gender Equality Rapporteur from 2013 to 2016 and Second Vice Chair from 2014 to 2016. More recently, before taking up her judicial duty in Strasbourg, she was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee from 2015 to 2018 and served as its Vice President from 2017 to 2018.
Judge Jelić publishes extensively on topics including European and international protection of human rights, the rule of law, gender equality, and minority rights. Her recent work also addresses the application of the living instrument doctrine by the ECtHR.
