Book and exhibition project „Atlas of Reproduction – Babys, Border Geopolitics“

The exhibition maps the connections between geopolitics and the intimate decisions made in bedrooms, delivery rooms and hospitals. It explores decisions such as whether and how to fulfill the desire to have children – for example, through egg donation or surrogacy – whether to adopt a child or to place a child up for adoption, as well as issues relating to contraception, family planning, abortion and reproductive self-determination. The atlas illustrates how national and global political frameworks shape personal reproductive experiences and decisions. It is not intended to provide a comprehensive overview of reproductive inequalities worldwide. Instead, drawing on eight case studies, it offers fragmentary insights into the lived realities of reproductive inequalities and highlights their spatial and transnational connections. Each installation comprises a thematic map, an artistic work and an accompanying text. 

Artists and researchers from the Social and Cultural Geography Group at the University of Bern created the artistic installations in collaboration. The exhibition was developed by the mLAB at the University of Bern's Institute of Geography – an experimental laboratory that fosters dialogue by bringing together science and art. It was realized in collaboration with the Institute of Design Research at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB). Based on many years of research, the ‘Atlas of Reproduction’ encourages nuanced discussion of issues surrounding reproductive justice.
