Talk by Prof. Henry T. (Hank) Greely from Stanford University on “Genetics, Stem Cells, and the Future of Human Reproduction”

The “Human Reproduction Reloaded | H2R” project of the University of Zurich has the pleasure to invite you to the talk “Genetics, Stem Cells, and the Future of Human Reproduction” by Prof. Henry T. (Hank) Greely from Stanford University.

Genetics will be important in embryo selection and, to some extent, in germ line editing. Stem cell research will be important in making eggs and sperm from somatic cells, such as skin cells, and, in the long run, in producing an “artificial uterus” and full ex vivo pregnancy. Prof. Greely will lay out the science but will focus on the ethical, legal, social, and political implications of these changes.

The talk will be chaired by Prof. Bernhard Rütsche from the University of Lucerne in Switzerland.

Brown Bag Lunch with Pawel Pelczar

Genetically modified animals play a vital role in biomedical research. They often help us to understand complex biological phenomena or serve as disease models. CRISPR/Cas9 and other recently developed genome engineering techniques have greatly simplified the transgenesis process and thus increased our capacity to rapidly generate genetically modified organisms. In my talk I will summarize the advances in the field of animal genome engineering as well as address technical and ethical challenges created by these new technologies.
