Talk by Professor Reva Siegel from Yale Law School

The URPP “Human Reproduction Reloaded” in collaboration with F.Ius, the Gender Legal Studies group at the University of Zurich, has the pleasure to invite to you the talk “Equal Protection in Dobbs and Beyond: How States Protect Life Inside and Outside of the Abortion Context” by Professor Reva Siegel of Yale Law School.

The talk will be take place online on 6 December 2022 from 17.00-18.30 (CET / Swiss time).

Description of the talk

Professor Siegel co-authored an amicus brief on equal protection in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization whose reasoning the Supreme Court criticized before going on to reverse Roe v. Wade. She will be discussing the significance of the equal protection argument in and after the Dobbs decision, as the abortion debate continues in the United States. (Recent elections have reaffirmed widespread public support for the right the Supreme Court repudiated.)

After discussing Dobbs, Professor Siegel will briefly locate developments in the United States in transnational perspective and conclude her remarks by relating the equal protection argument to constitutional law decisions in a few other jurisdictions, with special attention to the “Green Wave” decisions of Colombia and Mexico.
